As any first-year law student knows, implicit in such a question is an admission of knowledge about, and therefore culpability in, the violent events of January 6. Thus, it would no longer be necessary to establish a link between Trump’s words and the subsequent storming of the Capitol. From the start, Trump has made the point abundantly clear: the sole reason for, and purpose of, his rally that day was a protest of the election result. He made very clear, in his speech, that attendees would march to the Capitol – and Trump, himself, said he’d be going along – which puts the onus of responsibility for those subsequent events directly on Trump himself.
I suppose he ought to be thanked for that. It will save the Committee a considerable amount of time, and will probably be helpful for a Grand Jury to know this as well, later on, at such time he is indicted for his role in the events.
Incidentally, it’s only fair to point out that refusing to provide testimony and documents is obstruction of justice, as is influencing others to refuse to cooperate. Even if he did nothing more, obstruction of justice is, itself, a felony.
n short, if Trump wants to avoid prison, he’d best shut the hell up.

And you seriously think Trump would use a crowd of unarmed supporters to take over the government?! That makes no sense! If that was a coup, tell me how it was supposed to work. Trump put out ONE message, telling them to stop and go home. And they had to videotape that ONE message multiple times until he got it right. Because, time and again, he forgot to tell them to stop and go home.
He put out one other message, saying there should be no violence. But that was issued during the height of the violence, when few if any of those causing the violence actually saw it, or even might have seen it. Even so, in that message, he did not tell anyone to stop and go home.
Incidentally, no firearms were taken from any of the protesters. Which is not to say that they were unarmed. We simply don’t know. However, it’s very likely that, at least, some were armed. This should come as no surprise, nor is there anything necessarily wrong, or even unusual about it. After all, many people have duly-issued permits to carry firearms, and they do so legitimately. Many places (such as banks) “prohibit” firearms, but a violation is generally a civil matter, and unless specific behaviors warrant it, violators are not prosecuted.
The vast majority who were inside the Capitol left voluntarily – for the most part, peacefully and without incident – when it became clear they weren’t going to achieve whatever objective(s) they may have had. Few, if any, were searched as they made their way back outside. There were relatively few on-scene arrests that day.
Personally, I would not call what happened a “coup attempt.” But I do call it an insurrection, because, strictly speaking and by definition, that’s precisely what it was. A coup implies a goal of taking over the government. An insurrection is a violent uprising against a government – a “demonstration,” if you will – but not necessarily intended to be a coup.
That all being said, it’s important to note the timing of events that day. Trump concluded his 63-minute speech at 11:03 am. At 11:00, Congress convened in joint session, in the House chamber, to hear the official reports of each state’s electoral votes. Trump had made it clear that he wanted people to make their displeasure known – directly, to the members of Congress. Obviously, this couldn’t happen outdoors; Congress was indoors, in session, in the windowless House chamber. No one would have seen any such displeasure. It had to happen indoors, in the House chamber, where all members of Congress would see it, simultaneously.
Thus, Congress would be a captive audience. With all that implies.
